'We are concerned about the life of the Bishop of Buenaventura, Rubén Jaramillo' - Cali - Colombia

The Church warned this Monday that the threats against the Bishop of Buenaventura, Rubén Darío Jaramillo Montoya, who maintains that telling the uncomfortable truth to sectors associated with interests of illegal economies and even politicians.

Last Friday, Monsignor Jaramillo made a overflight in conflict zones and said it was a rain of holy water asking for the cessation of violence.

In a statement from the Episcopal Conference of ColombiaFather Darío Echeverri, general secretary of the National Conciliation Commission (CCN), denounces that the threats against the life of Bishop Jaramillo Montoya continue.

We are concerned about the life of Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo, the Bishop of Buenaventura, he as a good shepherd and carrying in his heart the pain of his people has denounced what is happening there

Father Echeverri points out that the Bishop of the port has been banned from certain places in the territory of the district where he cannot travel and that are part of his Jurisdiction.

“We are greatly concerned about the life of Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo, the Bishop of Buenaventura, as a good shepherd and carrying in his heart the pain of his people, he has denounced what is happening there. How the armed actors have been merciless in this region against this population and, as he has had the courage, the prophetic courage to denounce what is happening there, now he is the victim“, denounced the secretary of the secretary of the National Conciliation Commission.

In this sense, Father Echeverri made an urgent call to the National Governmentl so that greater accompaniment and attention is offered to the population, noting that this port has always suffered neglect due to the pain of the population.

The spokesman for the Conciliation Commission invited “the armed actors to stop their cruelty against the Afro-descendant, indigenous and settler population that live there.” He also asks that the war cease and peace reign in this Pacific region.

On March 3, 2021, the UN Human Rights Colombia expressed its solidarity with Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo. “We recognize your hard work for #HumanRights and #peace. We request all measures for your protection. We condemn threats against you.”

In that same sense, the mayor of Buenaventura, Victor Hugo Vidal, He presented his “total rejection of the threats against the Bishop of Buenaventura, Rubén Dario Jaramillo. Solidarity with the Bishop and the Diocese. We invite the authorities to protect him and the people to support him.”
