One of the great tasks we have is to demystify that when we talk to adolescents and young people about sexuality we are encouraging them to do so

“One of the great tasks we have is to demystify that when we talk to adolescents and young people about sexuality we are encouraging them to do it, and it is the opposite, young people have the right to have information, because by having it, they are capable of making responsible decisions,” commented Puello.

The complex figures

20% of Colombian adolescents become pregnant for the second time between 7 and 14 months after the first delivery

Teenage pregnancy is one of the problems that most affects young people from low socioeconomic strata. According to the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, these young women correspond to 18.4% of the population.

“This problem is recognized worldwide as one of the main factors that perpetuate the circles of poverty, resulting in a worsening of their educational, economic, social and health conditions that end up affecting not only their quality of life but also that of your baby, your family and community,” the District commented.

In 2015 Unicef and the Universidad de los Andes conducted a study that estimated that “20% of Colombian adolescents become pregnant for the second time between 7 and 14 months after the first birth and 33% between 14 and 24 months then”.

This means that more than half of the adolescents who have a child have a second pregnancy during the next 2 years.

“In 2018, these figures were supported in a study carried out by the United Nations Population Fund, also specifying that of the women who became mothers between the ages of 10 and 19, only 13.8% managed to continue with their studies and 15.7% of adolescents died from causes related to pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium,” added a spokesperson.
