Indigenous boy was injured by the Police during crop eradication - Other Cities - Colombia

The community of the Embera La Italia indigenous reservation, in Puerto Asís (Putumayo), denounced through a video that a 10-year-old boy was injured during a violent action by uniformed Anti-Narcotics Police that he was going to carry out a coca eradication in the territory.

The video shows when the community is talking to the Antinarcotics agents, who apparently leave. However, the community approaches them and an agent fires a shot, which ended up causing injuries to the left arm of the 10-year-old boy Elio Niasa.

We ask the Prosecutor’s Office to carry out the investigations, to bring to ordinary justice those responsible for these acts that violated the integrity of the child Elio Niasa.

The National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC) rejected this action by the Anti-Narcotics Police that has Elio recovering in a care center.

“From ONIC, we ask the Attorney General’s Office to carry out the investigations, to bring to ordinary justice those responsible for these acts that violated the integrity of the child Elio Niasa. To the Attorney General’s Office, to carry out the pertinent actions to initiate the disciplinary process against the police officials who were involved in this unfortunate event,” the entity declared in a statement.

As reported by the ONIC, the eradication process that the Police intended to carry out in La Italia was forced and it had not been previously agreed with the community that resides in the area.

Finally, the indigenous entity requested support from the human rights defense authorities to protect the Embera community of La Italia.

“We call on the Ombudsman’s Office, Municipal Personería of Puerto Asís and multilateral bodies such as the OAS and the UN to accompany this case and, within the framework of their functions, make the necessary requests to the Colombian State to address the situation in the area criminal, disciplinary and with due attention with a differential ethnic approach to prevent new events,” they concluded.
