The Government approved last Tuesday the decree law that regulates that masks are no longer mandatory abroad at the moment when the sixth wave of the pandemic in Spain is in the declining phase and after a historical rise in the accumulated incidence originated by the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2.

But it is allowed that in the outdoor patios of schools, children over 6 years old are allowed to remove the mask that they must continue to use in classes.
When is it mandatory to wear the mask?
A mask must always be used, from 6 years of age, regardless of the safety distance, in the following cases:
- In any closed space for public use or that is open to the public, such as supermarkets, shops, schools, workplaces…
- In the outdoor mass events, when attendees are standing. If they are seated, it will be mandatory when a safety distance of 1.5 meters between people cannot be maintained, except for groups of cohabitants.
- In the means of transport by air, by bus or by rail, including passenger platforms and stations, or by cable car, as well as complementary public and private passenger transport in vehicles with up to nine seats, including the driver, if the occupants of the tourism vehicles They do not live in the same address.
- In closed spaces ships and boats when the safety distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained, except for groups of cohabitants.
In what cases is the mask exempt?
- To people who present some type of respiratory illness or difficulty that may be aggravated by the use of the mask or that, due to their situation of disability or dependency, they do not have the autonomy to remove the mask, or present behavioral changes that make its use unfeasible.
- In the event that, for the nature of the activitiesthe use of the mask is incompatible, in accordance with the indications of the health authorities.
- In closed spaces for public use that are part of the place of residence of the groups that meet there, such as institutions for the care of the elderly or disabled.
- Also in the dependencies destined to collective residence of essential workers or other groups that have similar characteristicsprovided that the vaccination coverage against covid-19 is greater than 80% with the complete schedule and the booster dose, accredited by the competent health authority.
- This last exception will not apply to external visitors or workers in residential centers for the elderly or disabled, since in this case the use of a mask is mandatory.
