“Here they force us to lock ourselves up, the order is that we cannot open businesses and no one can leave for Cúcuta or Ocaña. Being on the road is risking having your car burned or killed,” said a Tibú resident.
This event occurred hours after alleged members of the Eln intimidated the merchants of La Gabarra to force them to close their business premises. The roads inside the hamlet were blocked with tires that were incinerated.
It is not the first time that the ELN has carried out patrols in Catatumbo towns. The last case occurred in November 2021, when several armed men walked the streets of a commercial sector in the municipality of Convención.
Major General Omar Sepúlveda, commander of the Army’s Second Division, indicated that in the last 72 hours the ELN has perpetrated 16 terrorist actions in Norte de Santanderof which 15 have been neutralized.
“The bandits of the Eln and the other armed groups have very clandestine urban cells. These cells are confused with the civilian population. They are actions of one or two bandits who place a box and run away,” said the senior officer.
For its part, the representative of Tibú, through a statement, called on the armed actors to respect the Medical Mission and not put health personnel at risk.
“There are five patients in referral processes with vital emergencies and the obstruction of the pathway prevents the transfer to a higher level care center. Therefore, we reiterate once again the urgent call to make way for the Medical Mission”, indicates the profession.
For now, the violent actions in the framework of the armed strike have focused on ten municipalities in Norte de Santander: Puerto Santander, Villa del Rosario, Tibú, El Tarra, El Carmen, Hacarí, Bucarasica, El Zulia, Los Patios and Cúcuta.
