This is one of the conditions that moved researchers from the universities of the Atlantic and Cartagena to work on the creation of novel pharmacological strategies for the effective treatment of leishmaniasis,

The research team is currently working on more effective and focused formulas for the disease using photodynamic therapies.

At UniAtlántico, this research is led by researchers Carlos Diaz Uribe and William Vallejoboth from the Photochemistry and Photobiology Research Group, attached to the Doctorate in Tropical Medicine, and from the University of Cartagena, Doris Gomez and the doctorate graduate Fabian Spit.

The first tests

In the first report released by the researchers, the work of the first phase is highlighted, in which the photodynamic properties of several compounds were designed, synthesized and evaluated and it was found that some of them eliminated the parasite more effectively than the drug Glucantime.
These results have been presented at scientific outreach events and published. international magazinesIt’s high impact.

In the second phase, the studies will continue and in vivo tests will be carried out, in a model of mice infected with the Leishmania spp complex, experiments that will provide more information on the pharmacological properties of the new compounds in the goal of creating a effective and safe drug for future research in humans that will allow more effective and focused treatments of leishmaniasis.

Research has focused on the synthesis and study of the characteristics and properties of new porphyrin and metalloporphyrin-type compounds with potential activity against the Leishmania spp.

“These investigations contribute to providing solutions to public health problems that can benefit the affected population,” said the vice-rector for Research, Extension and Social Projection, Leonardo Niebles Nunez.
