Barranquilla: pensioners without property tax obligation - Barranquilla - Colombia

For the purchase of housing in Barranquilla, a pensioner can save up to 10 years without paying property tax.

This benefit is what the District Mayor’s Office and Colpensiones began to promote, with which retirees could save more than 42 million pesos, compared to buying a home in other cities in the country.

This was announced by Mayor Jaime Pumarejo during a conversation with the president of Colpensiones, Juan Miguel Villa, in which the Secretary of Economic Development, Ricardo Plata Sarabia, and the head of Control of the Revenue Management Department of the District, John Calderon.

Pumarejo confirmed that in Colombia there are a million and a half pensioners in the entity Colpensiones, who will be able to access this tax exemption and, therefore, to all the benefits that Barranquilla has to offer.

“We open the doors to all Colombians and foreigners who want to come to Barranquilla to enjoy and end their lives with friendship, joy, love and good neighbors from Barranquilla who want to receive them,” he said.

The president added that another of the advantages of the city it is how cheap it is compared to other cities in the country, where you spend less, have a good offer in the health system, public spaces and, in addition, have the magic of the Caribbean nearby.

In turn, the president of Colpensiones, Juan Miguel Villa, celebrated the initiative that offers tax facilities to older people who plan to enjoy their retirement in Barranquilla.

“Today I want to invite all Barranquilla entrepreneurs to think about the silver economy or the ‘gray-haired economy’, which moves resources that represent 12.8 percent of the country’s GDP. There are more than 1.5 million pensioners in Colpensiones who can benefit from these new business alternatives focused on serving this elderly population, which is increasing more every day”.

The meeting was attended by 200 retirees, who learned how to access property tax exemption, a benefit with which they could save up to 42.1 million pesos, as was shown by a comparative exercise on the purchase of a home in the main cities of the country.

In addition to this, the study carried out by the Planning Secretariat indicates that in the capital of Atlántico the average value per square meter is 637,000 pesos less than in other main cities of Colombia such as Bogotá, Cali or Medellín.

Applications that have already received

To date, the Revenue Management Department reports that they have already received 15 applications to access the benefit and it is expected that with this alliance the city will ratify itself as an attractive destination for the population in retirement condition.
