Controversy in Popayán over the death of a newborn - Other Cities - Colombia

A controversy arose in Popayán, after the complaint of a couple who pointed to the staff of the La Estancia clinic as allegedly responsible for the death of his newborn son.

According to the newborn’s relatives, the little one died due to medical negligence.

“Since Saturday we asked for a cesarean section because the child was very big and fat, to which the doctor tells me that as if a 12-year-old girl could give birth, how could a 20-year-old woman not be able to do it”, told Diego Alejandro González, father of the deceased minor.

Likewise, he assured that, in the middle of the procedure, andhe little boy acquired an infection that affected his vital organs, and although a medicalized ambulance was requested to transport the baby to Cali to a higher level center, EPS Sanitas denied the request.

“The culprits are the clinic La Estancia and Sanitas, that justice be done. This is not going to stay like this”, expresses a young woman in a video that circulates on social networks.

The little boy was buried this Wednesday in the Yanaconas cemetery of that capital.

The parents assure that they will institute legal actions against the Clinic and against the EPS.

For its part, staff of the care center reported being victims of aggression and intimidation by the baby’s relatives.

One of those who claims to have been the victim of attacks, is a gynecologist, who said that a mob pounced on him, accusing him of being the murderer of the newborn.

Three other doctors also reported threats.

“It is important that we understand that violence cannot be the way under any circumstances. We understand the doubts that relatives may have and we will be ready by doctors, and directives to provide the necessary information, “said the La Estancia clinic through a statement.

“We call for respect for our Medical Mission, we insist that aggression cannot be the protagonist in this type of situation. This medium sought a statement from EPS Sanitas on this subject, but they have not sent it.

Yesterday, Monday, the mayor of Medellín Daniel Quintero reported that he will travel to Washington (USA) and that there he will report to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) the increase in threats against him and irregularities in what he called his dismissal.

For Quintero it was necessary that his security scheme not be changed and he gave as an example Luis Carlos Galán, a candidate for the presidency of Colombia who was assassinated in 1989.

So for the same reason, it is necessary to bring to the attention of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights two important requests that I ask. First, that there are no changes in the security scheme because we know what happens in the country when people change their security scheme; second, that the control bodies be reminded that the only way in which a mayor can be removed is with a final criminal ruling,” said Quintero.

These declarations and denunciations of the mayor were criticized by his opponents and promoters of his revocation.

According to Andrés Felipe Rodríguez, the mayor is the one who has really harassed the opposition.

“Let us remember that it is Daniel Quintero who has harassed us, persecuted us, infiltrated us, has espionaged us, has illegally recorded us, has profiled us,” Rodríguez added.

For him, making opposition in the city is already a “sin” and that there is a “municipal microdictatorship” in which the recall is sought to be avoided at all costs.

“He is free to go and say whatever he wants, what makes me curious is that he go out and say that, that he goes to the IACHR. Could it be that he already has information that we are going to recall and the vote is invertible and is he using the same petrista manual to avoid the recall?”, the leader of the recall questioned.

For his part, the councilman of Medellín, Julio González, said that said complaint regarding the recall is “absurd and what he wants is to violate the National Constitution, ignoring the fundamental constitutional right of the people.”

“The revocation is a political right, it is not a sanction,” he added.

It should be remembered that Quintero had said that he is seeking before the IACHR that “stop the persecution by some control agencies, and Colombian authorities are reminded that democratically elected mayors can only be suspended through a final criminal ruling, thanks to the ‘Petro ruling’ that prevented the breakdown of democracy in Colombia. What the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights does is protect democracy and we hope that it will do so in our case,” added the mayor.

US Plan for New Center to Process Afghan Evacuees in Virginia Sparks Controversy

Washington — 

The U.S. government aims to open a new center in Northern Virginia to receive additional Afghan evacuees, according to four sources familiar with the matter, although even before any official announcement the local sheriff in the area raised concerns about the plan.

The center is due to open as the government closes down the last of eight sites on military bases that housed tens of thousands of people evacuated from Afghanistan since August. It would be staffed by multiple U.S. agencies involved with the resettlement effort and could be operational by late February or early March, a senior U.S. official told Reuters.

The site being considered is in Leesburg, Virginia, according to two of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement to Reuters that it was still working to confirm the location of the center.

The sheriff’s office of Loudoun County, where Leesburg is located, issued a statement Thursday saying it was told by DHS that the government planned to bus some 2,000 Afghan evacuees a month, mostly relocating from Qatar, to the National Conference Center (NCC) from nearby Dulles International Airport beginning this month.

Sheriff Michael Chapman raised concerns about a “lack of communication, lack of planning, language barriers” as well as “the NCC’s unfenced proximity to a residential neighborhood and two public schools,” according to the statement.

DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the sheriff’s concerns. Chapman said he had spoken to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on the matter.

The remaining Afghans currently housed at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey – the last of the eight sites on military bases – are expected to be resettled in communities around the country in the coming days.

Major milestone

The move away from placing refugees in repurposed military installations marks a major milestone in U.S. President Joe Biden’s evacuation operation launched as the Taliban overran Afghanistan in August.

About 1,200 Afghans were still at the base, commonly known as Fort Dix, as of Tuesday, DHS said. The agency told Reuters that the base will continue housing evacuees awaiting resettlement until the new processing center is set up.

About 80,000 Afghans have been resettled in the United States as part of “Operation Allies Welcome” in the largest effort of its kind since the Vietnam War era.

The population passing through bases included applicants to the Special Immigrant Visa program, which is available to Afghans at risk of Taliban retaliation who worked for the U.S. government.

Others were admitted to the United States temporarily via “humanitarian parole” with the option to apply for asylum.

The Biden administration has urged Congress to create a more direct pathway to citizenship for Afghans.

Thousands of vulnerable Afghans are still stranded abroad as the U.S. government evaluates their cases and wrestles with logistical challenges to processing their admission.

Eligible Afghans currently in third countries could be allowed entry through an expedited refugee admission process, Reuters reported earlier this month.

But for Afghans still inside Afghanistan the pathways are limited. As of data from mid-February, the U.S. government had only approved around 170 applications out of 43,000 Afghans who have applied for “humanitarian parole” to come to the United States.

Controversy in Cartagena over the suspension of the PAE due to an increase in food prices - Other Cities - Colombia

The Secretary of District Education of Cartagena (SED) reported that the deliveries of industrialized rations to students benefiting from the School Feeding Program (PAE) have been affected since last Tuesday by defaults by operators.

Today there are 106,000 students in 205 schools without receiving food rations.

The District Secretary of Education rejected the late notice of the operators and recalled that the arguments expressed do not exempt them from the administrative and contractual decisions applied by the District within the framework of the current contracts.

Even so, the operator suspended the school feeding service between February 16, 17, 18 and 21, 2022.

District promises legal action

The legal team of the Ministry of Education reported that it is analyzing the situation to provide a timely response and take the legal actions that must be applied to the operators within the framework of the contracts for the provision of school meals.

We cannot unilaterally be causing problems for children, a contract is not resolved in that way,” said Martínez.

The District asked the Ombudsman and other surveillance and control entities to be permanently integrated into the daily tasks of PAE supervision carried out by the Secretary of Education since the beginning of the school calendar, in the company of the School Feeding Committees, made up of teachers and parents.
