Santa Marta during recent weeks has been hit by strong gusts of wind that wreak havoc in different areas of the urban area.

Fallen trees, damage to electrical infrastructure, as well as roofless businesses and homes, are part of the panorama left by the breezes that are stronger at night.

Relief agencies declared an orange alert in the face of emergencies unleashed by the dry season.

One of the cases that alerted was due to the fall of a leafy tree, which after being uprooted by the wind fell on a house. Fortunately, the building was vacant and there were no injuries.

(Important: Eln harassment against the National Army was recorded in Cesar)

Likewise, the temperature and the winds have triggered the number of vegetation cover fires. Firefighters deal with four to five conflagrations a day, demanding the maximum of their capacity.

Jorge Lizazo, head of the Advisory Office attached to the office of Mayor Virna Johnson, explained that “the hydrometeorological and meteorological conditions that give rise to the declaration of alerts by Ideam, are due to the phenomenon of intra-seasonal variability of the climate known as the dry season or less rain, which is expected to last until March 14.

According to the information provided by the Ideam, the threats are moderate, however, the territory could experience gusts of wind between 46 and 64 km/h, moving in a northeasterly direction; meanwhile the wave height will vary between 2.0 and 4.0 meters.

Recommendations for orange alert

In Santa Marta, different recommendations have been issued to avoid risks and complications during the current weather conditions.

(See: They denounce that a teacher kicked a dog in front of her students)

Among other warnings they suggest not to park vehicles under trees, power poles, billboards or other types of elements that can fall due to the effect of the winds.

Also deposit garbage in its place, to reduce the risk of fires in the vegetation cover.

During wind alerts, do not set sail in shallow-draft vessels without authorization from the port captain’s office.

Likewise, do not allow children and the elderly to enter the sea without their supervision and company and recommend refraining from using floats on the beaches.

In the village of Guachaca, rural area of Santa Marta, the children are receiving their classes in improvised classrooms in billiards and cockpits.

In this area, the available schools are small, quite deteriorated and do not offer the minimum conditions to accommodate the student population, which has grown considerably in recent years.

The community, desperate for the new generations to receive an academic education, adapted spaces that, although not adequate, allow children to meet to pursue their studies.

Emilse Giraldo, president of the Community Action Board of the district of Guachaca, assures that the maximum coverage of educational institutions has already been reached and that many children and adolescents have been left out.

(See: Three-year-old girl drowned in a tank in Santa Marta)

“In the case of the little ones, they have been attending classes that were adapted in public establishments for adults. Although it is not ideal, it is the only option we have for them to receive the educational service,” said the leader.

Here it is necessary to fix the current institutions and build a mega-school to meet the high demand

Giraldo called on the Mayor’s Office to provide study solutions to Guachaca, a territory that, as he describes, remains in oblivion by the rulers.

“Here we need to fix the current institutions and build a mega-school to meet the high demand. This is a great need that we have and I hope it will be met by the administration on duty”, expressed Emilse Giraldo.

The parents, although they are not satisfied that their children are teaching in a cockpit, end up accepting this temporary solution in the hope that the study conditions for the population will soon improve.

(See: Due to the explosion of the bridge in Pailitas (Cesar) they establish alternative routes)

“Although these rooms were improvised, we must bear in mind that previously they were a cockpit and a pool table, which could have bad effects on the health of my children,” said Neira Tarazona, a mother of a family.

For the inhabitants of Guachaca, it is not justified that in these two years of pandemic adjustments and maintenance have not been made to schools.

“All without exception are abandoned, and do not provide minimal guarantees to educational personnel,” said the president of the Action Board.

The current dry season has caused the Manzanares, Piedras and Gaira rivers, which supply the drinking water treatment plants of Santa Marta, to register a significant decrease in levels close to 50 percent. This fact generates a low water supply for the provision of the aqueduct service.

Although the provision of the service to users has not yet been totally affected, the public service company, Essmar, has already activated a care protocol to avoid a critical Depletion, like the one that has been held in previous years in the city.

The Call to Mayor Virna Johnson

Likewise, the representative of the Comptroller indicated that in Santa Marta it has become a bad practice to receive insults and threats every time a control body pronounces on some irregularity.

He also called on Mayor Virna Johnson not to get involved in the case of alleged findings against Essmar.

The foregoing, taking into account that it is the responsibility of the managers linked to the investigations to exercise their defense and with technical evidence demonstrate that there was no kind of detriment to public resources during their management at the head of Essmar.

A proposal put forward by the indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada to remove the monuments, busts and statues in homage to the colonial era of public places in Santa Marta was vehemently rejected by historians.

The initiative of the Arhuacos, Wiwa, Kogui and Ette Ennaka peoples was addressed in an ordinary session of the District Cultural Heritage Council.

For the indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada, these statues do not represent the essence of the Caribbean culture and therefore of the country.

Pronouncements against were immediate, mainly from the history academy del Magdalena, who considered this action as an attack on the history and essence of the capital of Magdalena.

Álvaro Ospino Valiente, president of the Academy, surprised by what the indigenous people are proposing, indicated that “I assumed that since the habitat context of these communities has always been the territory of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and not the esplanade where the city of Santa Marta did not feel affected”.

To address the issue, the historian cited a UK minister’s statement Boris Jhonson, who in a similar debate, stated at the time that “we cannot try, edit or censor our past. We cannot pretend to have a different story. The statues in our cities and towns were erected by previous generations. They had different perspectives, different interpretations of right and wrong. But those statues teach us about our past, with all its flaws.”

The historian’s point of view

That is our historical reality and we should not be ashamed of it

According to Ospina, it is impossible to ignore Rodrigo de Bastidas within the history of Santa Marta, and to do so would be a “stubbornness that is difficult to erase, as difficult as wanting to change his name, as wanting to tear down the Cathedral, because Catholicism was the instrument of subjugation.” Spanish”.

For the samarian historian, removing the monuments that highlight the colonial vision would be to allow the dismemberment of the history of the city.

“That is our historical reality and we should not be ashamed of it,” he says.

He also recalled that the main legacy inherited from the Spanish It is the language we currently use to communicate.

“If we want to renounce our Spanish component from that indigenous position, we should be ashamed and we should disappear it along with the statues of the founders of Latin American cities,” said the president of the Magdalena Academy of History.

Actions of the control bodies

The above reports are made so that, within the framework of their powers, said control bodies initiate the actions that may be appropriate.

It should be noted that, currently, the mayor’s office of Santa Marta, through legal actions, has tried to resume the management of Essmar, however, the Superintendence of Public Services, which ensures that the entity was on the verge of a financial collapse, has kept in administration.
