The Oscars rarely surprise by nominating four actors and spouses in the acting categories. But in this case it was the turn of Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz who are nominated for their performances in the film ‘Being the Ricardos’ and ‘Madres Paralelas’ respectively.

In the same way, Kristen Dunst and her husband Jesse Plemons received the nomination for best supporting actors for their roles in the Netflix movie ‘The Power of the Dog’, this being the most nominated film this time with a total of 12 nominations, including ‘Best film’.

Upon hearing the news, the Spanish couple did not take long to express their joy in public as it was the fourth nomination for both. In the case of Cruz, she indicated that it is her best nomination for the Academy Awards as she is with her husband and for making a film with Pedro Almodóvar. On the other hand, Bardem indicated: “Being able to share that with her makes me excited, it is a very special moment and I receive it with great humility.”

Other nominated couples

Throughout the 90-year history of the Oscars, few other couples have been nominated in the same year. Although not all of them have won, being next to each other is already a very important prize for some.

The first lovers to be nominated in the same edition were Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in 1932, who lost their respective awards. In 1967, the husband and wife Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor repeated history, although this time she won the Oscar for ‘Best Actress’ for her performance as ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ in ‘Gone With the Wind’, while he only got the nomination for ‘Best Actor’ for the movie ‘Wuthering Heights’.

The most recent case of a couple to win two Oscars was that of Frances Mcdormand and her husband Joel Cohen, Oscar in the same year. It was in 1997 that she received the award for ‘Best Actress’ while he won ‘Best Screenplay’ and ‘Director’ for the movie ‘Argo’.

Do you think any of these couples nominated this year will win both awards?
