For the purpose of eradicating the aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits dengue, the Secretary of Health of the Atlantic carries out prevention campaigns in the Mundo Feliz neighborhood, in the municipality of Galapa.

According to the authorities, an epidemiological situation with the virus has been occurring in this sector, so a day was held with the aim of educating the community on how to maintain clean environments in homes.

The departmental Secretary of Health, Alma Solano, indicated that they are in the active patient search with symptoms to establish prompt care and mitigate disease outbreaks.

The health guardians swept more than 500 houses, where they explained how to eradicate the mosquito that transmits dengue, how to identify and differentiate the signs and symptoms of the disease.

In addition, the group of officials in charge of vector-borne diseases has inspected 1,050 homes to identify deposits and possible mosquito breeding sites, according to official figures.

To eliminate the problem, it is essential that the community always check and frequently wash those sites or deposits to store liquids that can become possible breeding sites for the dengue mosquito, as recommended by this Secretariat.

These actions and prevention of dengue have been carried out in the 22 municipalities of the department and in their districts to guide the community towards the eradication of mosquito breeding sites.

Recommendations of the authorities

  1. Eliminate breeding sites for the dengue-transmitting mosquito.
  2. Discard unusable items.
  3. Periodically change the water in vases and constantly clean the tanks and pools where clean water is stored.
  4. Keep areas of the house dry where clean water can be stored or retained.
  5. Wash the tanks and pools with enough hypochlorite and, with the help of a brush, remove the eggs that the mosquito has deposited.

Dengue continues to affect the neighborhoods of Barranquilla. Due to the above, the District authorities continue to create strategies to combat the disease, with educational actions and house-to-house visits.

According to the Ministry of Health, daily, in different sectors, home inspections, inspections of water tanks in search of mosquito breeding sites, waste collection days and fumigations are carried out in different sectors.

The latest reports from the National Institute of Health (INS) reported 598 cases, of which 11 correspond to severe dengue. The southwestern town reports the highest number of cases with 32.17 percent.

‘Aguale la fiesta’, ‘My house is clean without dengue’ and ‘Don’t get caught out of place’ are campaigns promoted by the authorities, in coordination with other dependencies and entities.

The recommendations of the authorities

With them, they are providing the necessary tools so that families in their homes understand the importance of dealing with dengue.

Similarly, neighbors attend training eventscommunity mobilizations and other actions in which prevention measures are highlighted.

In this sense, the District Health Secretariat recommends checking the houses daily, collecting the unusable ones that can store water and, in case of any symptoms, consult the doctor or go to the nearest health institution.

Strategies focus on those most reported neighborhoods of cases, including Ciudadela 20 de Julio, Rebolo, La Luz, El Bosque, Carrizal, Simón Bolívar, El Santuario, El Ferry, Las Nieves, La Manga and El Recreo.

According to this dependency of the Mayor’s Office, during the course of 2022 there have been no deaths in the city due to dengue.

Thus, 5,918 homes have been inspected, 95 houses identified as breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, 20,976 water tanks have been located, and 204 indoor fumigations have been carried out, according to official figures.
