Federico Fico Gutiérrez, el candidato presidencial de la coalición de derecha en Colombia, ha sorprendido a todos al anunciar este sábado como su fórmula vicepresidencial a Rodrigo Lara Sánchez, un médico que fue alcalde de Neiva, una ciudad de menos de medio millón de habitantes en el centro del país. Mientras que Gustavo Petro y Sergio Fajardo, en cabeza de las otras grandes alianzas de izquierda y centro, respectivamente, se inclinaron por figuras afrocolombianas que representan a la periferia del país, Gutiérrez se decidió por Lara Sánchez, hijo del recordado Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, un ministro de Justicia asesinado por órdenes de Pablo Escobar en 1984.

Médico cirujano de la Universidad del Cauca, Lara Sánchez –medio hermano del también político Rodrigo Lara Restrepo– es una figura relativamente desconocida a nivel nacional que, después de dos décadas de trabajo en hospitales de Bogotá y Neiva, incursionó en la política en 2010 de la mano de Sergio Fajardo, quien se perfila como el principal rival de Gutiérrez por el boleto a la segunda vuelta de las presidenciales para enfrentar a Petro. El flamante candidato a vicepresidente fue alcalde entre 2016 y 2019 de Neiva, la capital del departamento del Huila, pero no aparecía entre los contendientes de ningún observador.

Gutiérrez lo presentó como “un colombiano común y corriente” en una desordenada rueda de prensa desde las calles de Medellín. “Compartimos una visión en la que lo que queremos es unir al país”, señaló al aludir al respeto y al diálogo junto a Lara Sánchez, quien a su turno rechazó los “discursos del odio”. El exalcalde de la capital antioqueña destacó que identifica “gente buena” en todos los sectores políticos, y que las regiones van a jugar un papel fundamental en las próximas elecciones.

En una campaña en la que la bandera del cambio cotiza al alza, Fico encabeza el Equipo por Colombia, la alianza más escorada a la derecha y de corte más continuista frente al impopular Gobierno de Iván Duque. El exalcalde de Medellín había dado hasta ahora pocas pistas sobre la escogencia de su segundo a bordo. La gran pregunta era si se iba a inclinar por una figura para cortejar votantes del centro político, que salió debilitado de las elecciones legislativas, o una que refrendara sus credenciales más conservadoras y lo acercara decididamente al Centro Democrático, el partido de Gobierno fundado por el expresidente Álvaro Uribe. El nombre de Lara Sánchez, quien siempre se ha mostrado elogioso con Fajardo, indica que ha optado por la primera opción.

Gutiérrez también reafirma, al menos desde lo simbólico, su discurso de lucha contra la herencia de los grandes cárteles del narcotráfico. Como alcalde de Medellín convirtió en un punto de honor la demolición del edificio Mónaco, que había construido Pablo Escobar, y consiguió tirarlo abajo en febrero de 2019.

Las dos encuestas que se han conocido después de las consultas que confirmaron a Petro como el rival a batir muestran a Gutiérrez, quien ha intentado reagrupar a la derecha en torno a su figura, como su más cercano perseguidor. En la de la firma Invamer, Petro registra el 32% de las preferencias y Gutiérrez el 23%, mientras que Fajardo iguala en torno al 10% con Rodolfo Hernández, el exalcalde de Bucaramanga. La de Yanhass arrojó unos resultados similares, con Petro en primer lugar (37%), seguido por Gutiérrez (19%), Hernández (11%) y Fajardo (10%). La primera vuelta de las presidenciales se vota el 29 de mayo; si ningún candidato obtiene más de la mitad de los votos, habrá una segunda vuelta el 19 de junio.

Gutiérrez ya obtuvo más de dos millones de votos en la consulta del Equipo por Colombia, que le dio forma a la temprana alianza de exalcaldes que forjó con Alex Char (Barranquilla) y Enrique Peñalosa (Bogotá). Después sumaron al precandidato del Partido Conservador, David Barguil, y Aydeé Lizarazo, del partido MIRA, de raíces cristianas. Aunque la alianza dejó por fuera a Óscar Iván Zuluaga, el otrora candidato oficial del Centro Democrático, este acabó por dar un paso al costado, reconoció que tenía pocas posibilidades de competir con Fico y le ofreció su respaldo.

Que Gutiérrez logre ser el verdadero contrapeso del petrismo aún depende de las alianzas que consiga sellar. Él era el último candidato que faltaba por destapar su carta a la vicepresidencia entre las tres grandes coaliciones. En busca de retomar el impulso perdido, Fajardo fue el primero en anunciar al exministro de Ambiente, Luis Gilberto Murillo, mientras que Petro confirmó el pasado miércoles que buscará la presidencia de la mano de Francia Márquez, la activista medioambiental que se convirtió en un fenómeno electoral en las primarias de la izquierda, a pesar de quedar segunda de su bloque.

Los demás candidatos que se mantuvieron al margen de los grandes bloques definieron previamente a sus fórmulas, pues sus plazos legales eran otros. El exalcalde de Bucaramanga Rodolfo Hernández –luego de que la periodista Paola Ochoa declinó el ofrecimiento– inscribió a Marlene Castillo, vicerrectora académica de la Universidad Minuto de Dios, en Bogotá. E Ingrid Betancourt, que abandonó ruidosamente la Coalición Centro Esperanza para ir por su partido, Verde Oxígeno, escogió al militar José Luis Esparza, que participó en la operación que la liberó después de pasar largos años secuestrada por la extinta guerrilla de las FARC.
