Carnival 2022: Barranquilla starts the party agenda from today - Barranquilla - Colombia

This Tuesday the first of March began in the Great River Boardwalk the schedule of Barranquilla Carnival 2022.

At 8:00 am, the exhibition was opened ‘River of Traditions’, which has 13 macro figures, made by master craftsmen who have worked for two months in the development of these works of art that will be on display until the end of March, as part of its economic reactivation during Carnival.

The agenda continues at 7:00 pm, with the delivery of the keys to Queen Valeria Charris and the baton King Momo Kevin Torres from the hands of Mayor Jaime Pumarejo Heins.

With this formal act, the district president symbolically cedes his power to the Queen, who will decree that from today until March 29, Barranquilla becomes a Carnival Districtto dance and enjoy for two.

The Carnival QueenHe will decree the start of the party, during the event ‘Joselito Lives’, where a tribute to life will be paid.

The sovereign will be accompanied by her royal court of makers, troupes, dances, cumbias and the Popular Queensto start the Carnival District.

Barranquilla Carnival has prepared, together with its Kings, a special moment that will bring together dance, music, makers and arts in one place, to celebrate the return of the Festival, as a symbol of life, in a very emotional encounter.

This is how the Cumbión de Oro directed by Gabriel Marriaga, the Reformed Congo Dance by Julio Sánchez, the Dance Cipote Scribble directed by Hernán Pernet, Isabel Muñoz’s Negritas Puloy de Montecristo; the group Son de Negros Tropical Rhythms of the Caribbean by Carmen Llerena, Marimondas from Barrio Abajo, directed by Patricia Gómez, the Monocucos de Las Nieves by Octavio Fontalvo, the Dance of the Identity Birds directed by Natividad Cabrera Meléndez; Dance El Caimán directed by Javier Rodríguez, Los Coyongos by Baltasar Sosa, Comparsa Africa Mia by Juan B. Cerpa, Comparsa Dacaná by Angélica Ortega and the Barranquilla Cultural Corporation directed by Mónica Lindo, will accompany the king and queen on a carnival tour.

With this event, Carnival of Barranquilla will open the great agenda that includes 19 great events that safeguard the tradition and the life of the carnival people, who this year will live the party in person.

Aire Medellín: Air quality episode starts on February 14 - Medellín - Colombia

The Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area (AMVA), the subregion’s environmental and mobility authority, announced the schedule for the first air quality episode in Medellin and its metropolitan area.

Historically, the subregion experiences two moments of air quality episodes due to the transitions between dry and rainy seasons: the first is between February and March and the second between October and November.

Juan David Palacio, director of AMVA, reported that this first episode will begin on February 14 and indicated that it would last until April 8.

“We calculate that there will be three complex weeks, between March 7 and 25in which the stations could present an Orange Air Quality Index (ICA), and even five or more stations could present a Red ICA, which indicates conditions that are harmful to the health of the inhabitants,” explained the manager.

However, for the beginning of the episode no additional changes or restrictions are contemplated to those that already exist.

That is to say, there will be no environmental pick and plate and the charge for circulation during pico y placa will not be eliminated either.

From the environmental authority they indicated that, according to measurements and forecasts, this episode will not be as strong as the one that occurred in 2020, but neither will it be as mild as last year, in which there was no restrictive measure.

However, according to how the measurements evolve and external factors such as forest fires that affect air quality, strict measures would be taken.

“It is quite possible that from February 21 there is a pick and plate to cargo vehicles, but it will depend on how the indicators are. It will be time that will tell if additional measures are taken, such as the suspension of the special circulation payment,” Palacio said.

The Metropolitan Area made a recommendation to the population to avoid prolonged physical activity outdoors and to use public transport during this period.

“The only solution to improve circulation in the territory, and in all the cities of the world, is the promotion of public transport as the backbone of mobility,” said Palacio.
