The legal adviser of the government of Magdalena, José Humberto Torres, denounced that in that department there are armed groups that are pressuring the population with threats to vote for Jorge Rodrigo Tovar son of former paramilitary leader Rodrigo Tovar Pupo, alias ‘George 40’.

Everything indicates that the heirs of parapolitics will also return to Congress

The official, from his Twitter account, called on the electoral bodies and authorities to put a magnifying glass on the electoral issue that, in this part of the country, tries to be clouded again by violence.

“In Magdalena, the GAO heirs of paramilitarism are forcing voters to vote for alias Yoyo, son of paramilitary chief Jorge 40. Everything indicates that the heirs of parapolitics will also return to Congress,” Torres said.

The legal adviser also pointed out that, despite being deprived of liberty, paramilitary chief ‘Jorge 40’ will return to Congress of the republic, again in a foreign body.

“This time he will be represented by his son, alias Yoyo, and by the heirs of parapolitics in Magdalena,” added the official.

Jorge Rodrigo Tovar intends to occupy one of the peace seats in the Chamber, which were designed for those who are in that condition,
although it is debated whether or not he is precisely a victim of violence.

The governor of Magdalena, Carlos Caicedo, in an electoral security council, he asked the security agencies to investigate these complaints and provide protection to those candidates who present some risk condition due to their political aspirations.

They denounce that a teacher kicked a dog in front of her students

The phrase ‘The past stepped on’ does not seem to apply in the life of the current senator Laureano Augusto Acuna Diazto whom the Supreme Court of Justice opened an investigation for vote buying, in the same process of September 2019 against Aida Merlano.

Today it is again ‘in the mouth’ of the control bodies, this time of the Attorney General’s Office, by an audio published by the lawyer of the former fugitive congresswoman, Miguel Ángel del Río, in which the ‘Flying Cat’ allegedly He talks about “buying 70,000 votes”.

To learn about the life of Acuña Díaz, you have to go back to March 25, 1971, when this Barranquilla native was born in the humble Santa Maria neighborhoodof the Metropolitan locality.

He is the son of Elvia Díaz and Laureano Acuña, whom he used to accompany in the social and civic activities that he led in the neighborhoods with the purpose of managing support for vulnerable communities.

He became a bachelor and, in that constant contact with the population, he met and made friendship with the Gerleins, when they intervened in the neighborhoods, especially in electoral campaigns. That’s how it started, as a collaborator of the brothers Jorge and Roberto.

The origin of the nickname ‘Flying cat’

I aspired to be president of that corporation, but on election day they already had another majority and I was left in the minority.

After gaining the trust of this political family, he managed to count on their support to be launched into the Barranquilla Council in 2002, by the Conservative party. What would happen a week after being elected as a councilor for the first time earned him the nickname of the ‘Flying Cat’.

After a few days in this District institution, the man, who because of the color of his eyes was already known as the cat, ‘fled’ or separated himself from the interests of the political group that promoted him.

“We had a majority in the Council and the election of a board of directors was coming, I aspired to be president of that corporation, but on the day of the election they already had another majority and I was in the minority,” Acuña explained in this way. W Radius.

To this is added that, at that time, the song was in full swing ‘The flying cat‘, one of those old school reggaeton that was playing at any time on commercial stations.

His time in the House and Senate

The man repeated for the second consecutive time in the Council of Barranquilla, to later make his debut in the Congress of the republic as Representative to the Chamber for the department of Atlántico (2010-2014). Later, he was seen allied with the Char family.

From there he ended up, from 2015 to the present, in the Senate for two consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022). Today he seeks to repeat for the third time in these instances, launching his candidacy for the day of March 13 .

A career with scandals

Making his debut as a senator, Laureano Acuña made headlines for a video in which he appeared, apparently, drunk and refusing to practice a breathalyzer testin Riohacha (La Guajira).

In the recording, he assured that he was not driving and claimed the traffic police for “wanting to incriminate him.” In statements to the media, he indicated that he was going to appeal the fine.

Likewise, in mid-June of last year he was accused of allegedly threatening the Mayor of Malambo (Atlántico), Rumenigge Monsalve, for the screenshots of some chats in which he allegedly wrote that “I go and take two shots at him.”

After the publication of the audio by the lawyer Del Río, Internet users have remembered this chat.

Given this situation, the municipal president said he was concerned about his safety and that of his family. While the senator maintained that “this chat is totally false.”

At the end of the same month, there was a shooting attack on the house of Mayor Monsalve. It should be clarified that this fact has not been related to the alleged threats in the chats and is being investigated by the authorities.

For that same month of 2021, he was again the target of criticism in the country for appearing in a video dancing and under the influence of alcohol, along with other people, without the biosecurity measures due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Currently, the senator faces the investigations of the Supreme Court (2019) and the investigation of the Attorney General’s Office (2022) for cases of vote buying. To the latter, he replied: “I will not be a guinea pig in a discussion far removed from any political connection.”

The group that took the initiative shared brochures in which messages were read rejecting the management of the presidential candidate Álex Char when he was mayor of the capital of Atlántico and, in the same papers, they invite him to “respond for the Merlano case”.

It must be remembered that the former congresswoman, a fugitive from justice, pointed out to the former president and other leaders of the Caribbean coast of having made millionaire contributions to her campaign for the Senate in 2018. was denied by Char.

“Public complaint: we have just been attacked by these four subjects, one of them kicked me, they arrived in a car, they took away the pedagogy from the volunteers, they threatened us that we could not distribute that. These people came directly looking for me,” said the author of the initiative, Reynaldo Torres.

In a video that he shared on his social networks, the youth leader pointed to the alleged group of aggressors who was arguing with two musicians, who, apparently, were also attacked, according to the activist and economist.

“They don’t let us work. They come attacking and there may be a murga (fight), so go look for murga elsewhere”, said one of the musicians during the discussion with the alleged aggressors.

Concerned about freedom of expression

I contacted the Ombudsman and they are going to send everything to the person in charge of early warnings

In dialogue with EL TIEMPO, Torres regretted what happened and maintained that it was “something premeditated”, when he got out of the vehicle and arrived directly at prevent activity.

“The seriousness of the matter is trying to intimidate and threaten freedom of expression, the development of political exercises as citizens, and sow fear so that people step aside,” said the young man.

It also indicated that it is in the process of filing a formal complaint before the authorities for these events that took place on the corner of Calle 52 and Carrera 54.

“Supposedly they were going to contact me the next day to take my statement, but there was no communication. They told me to do that virtual process. I contacted the Ombudsman and they are going to send everything to the person in charge of early warnings to advise me and make the complaint”, she said.

Police are accused of shooting a man and taking his life

In the eye of the hurricane is the candidate for the Chamber for La Guajira, Juan Loreto Gómez Soto, after learning of alleged pressure from officials of the mayor of Uribia to invaders of a propertyto whom they would be promising land titles in exchange for votes.

The denunciations of the demands of the vote this March 13 in exchange for property deeds, also cover Senator Mauricio Trujillo, who aspires to repeat a seat, both represent the Conservative Party.

They are the candidates that the team supports for the ‘Transformation of Uribia’, which brought the current president Bonifacio Henríquez to the mayor’s office.

Property was donated by the Ministry of
Defense to the municipality of Uribia

The complaints are related to the ‘Flor del Campo’ property, which until a few weeks ago was owned by the Ministry of Defense, but was ceded free of charge to the municipality through Resolution No. 0225 of January 25, 2022.

Said property is made up of some 366 hectares and according to what was indicated by the Municipal Planning Secretary, René Lindarte, It is inhabited by some 3,200 families: 14,000 people including older adults, adults, youth and children.

The mayor’s office had made the request, through the official letters of February 23 and May 6, 2021, in order that the property be transferred to it, which since 1943 was declared vacant at the La Guajira Special Police Station and made available to the Army. , but it is no longer used and is not necessary for the development of its institutional mission.

Living conditions are deplorable there

The District’s purpose was to provide housing solutions for local and migrant families who have informally settled on the site for about eight years.

However, in the settlement the housing conditions are deplorable, most of them are built in mud and yotojoro, a material extracted from the cactus. It does not have public services since, due to lack of ownership, the municipality could not invest in the area. Of course, the area is full of posters of the two candidates.

However, the municipality defends political propaganda in the midst of misery.

For the secretary, political advertising with posters is just normal, “we are in a campaign process where there are candidates making political proselytism in the country and then there must be people who are identifying with a candidate,” says the official.

He reproaches that they want to damage the work they have been doing with signs like these, so they will continue, “that is not what is going to stop us so that we can continue with that social work that we have outlined and that is going favor of the community. Our government has an expiration date and we cannot stop,” he said.

They denounce that individuals asked for
600 thousand pesos for deeds

Lindarte assures that the information they received was that they were being scammed, they were asking for 600 thousand pesos for the deeds, so the network of leaders was activated to keep people informed of how the process was going to be carried out.

“We received that complaint demanding money, not political proselytism,” said the Secretary of Planning.

It clarifies that there is a process prior to the granting of the deeds, such as carrying out a soil study, a characterization process and promoting an urban development model, since eight neighborhoods would be created.

The candidate’s defense

The candidate for the House of Representative for La Guajira, Juan Loreto Gómez, who was on the run in Alta Guajira, was surprised by the complaint, since he had never visited the settlement, so he asked the competent authorities to do the relevant research.

Also, he invited citizens to denounce any irregular situation of any person or group offering gifts in exchange for votes since they do not agree with bad political practices.

(Also: Students from Barranquilla and Atlántico ‘crack’ in their command of English)

“Perhaps it is a story poorly told with particular political interests that generates this type of reaction and that I would also react in this way, but I want them to be clear that we do not do rigged practices,” said Gómez.

He also assured that he has more commitment to go to that community, “knowing that there are supporters there means that the proposal has echoed in the department, even in the popular sectors it has generated good acceptance,” said the candidate.

It should be noted that Juanlo aspires to occupy the seat currently held by his mother María Cristina ‘Tina’ Soto, who is being investigated by the investigation chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Soto, was called for investigation for her alleged participation in a complex network of electoral corruption that would have been forged for her arrival in Congress in the 2018 elections.

The congresswoman is criminally investigated to answer for the crimes that accuse the voter of corruption, conspiracy to commit a crime, falsehood in public and private documents and procedural fraud.

reactions

The candidate for the Chamber for the Liberal Party, Jarlen Garrido Weber, asked Gómez to clarify the situation, because it is a very delicate accusation, which is not good for democracy, nor for the department of La Guajira, which is going through a difficult situation.

“We have had experiences in the past with the removal of former governors and there is an investigation in the Supreme Court of representative María Cristina Soto for precisely the same crime and we want the department to have enough clarity so that we are not involved in a new traffic scandal or of buying or exchanging votes for privileges,” Garrido said.
