On Tuesday afternoon, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported a new ash fall coming from Nevado del Ruiz volcano on Manizales and its neighboring city, Villamaría. This occurs after several days in which, although active, no similar emissions had been recorded in the direction of this area of the country.
“These emissions were related to seismic signals of a moderate energy level associated with the movement of fluids inside the volcanic ducts,” the SGC reported.
The Nevado del Ruiz Volcano remains at activity level yellow or III, within which – according to the authorities – this behavior is normal. However, significant changes are not ruled out.

According to the same entity, during the past week there were 11 episodes of seismicity type drum beat of low energy level, which were recorded on February 23, 26 and 28, with the 23rd being the day where the greatest increase in the number of this seismicity was observed. “On February 23, the column of gases and steam reached a maximum height of 2,916 meters measured on the top of the volcano”they added.
According to official information, this type of activity has been related to processes of ascent, emplacement-growth and evolution of a lava dome at the bottom of the Arenas crater.
