A program that focused on improving the social conditions of the inhabitants of informal settlements began the District Mayor’s Office of Barranquilla.

The initiative known as resettlement covers 11 areas of the city, where District officials are “extending the district offer of services to dignify families, regardless of whether they are from Barranquilla, from other regions of the country or foreigners,” announced Mayor Jaime Pumarejo.

Communities settled in Las Flores, Villa Caracas, La Loma, Juan Mina, Brisas del Río, Blessing of God, Villanueva, El Pueblo, El Rubí, El Edén and the Ahuyama spout are the beneficiaries, because in them the Government has found a complex social panorama.

We are coming to change their reality, so that they have a stable roof or their own, study opportunities, health care, markets for their businesses and security.

Edubar officials enter the zones to develop the characterization plan. Through this, the following are established: legal situation, the needs of the community, health aspects, the condition of the property or the land on which it is built, economic activities, in other aspects.

“We are coming to change their reality, so that they have a stable roof or their own, study opportunities, health care, markets for their enterprises and security”, because “we have said that” Barranquilla is a land of opportunities in which we all fit. ”, added Mayor Pumarejo.

The offer delivered by the District includes options such as temporary leases, replacement housing, transportation aid, transfer of the place of residence, payment of economic activities or payment of construction, among others, according to each situation.

Similarly, it is taken into account that not all members wish to return to their places of origin, the process offers the possibility of accompanying them and advising them on the legalization of their stay in the city.

“Most of these people live in half-built houses, with board walls and a zinc roof, without formal public services or paved streets. The majority live in hydric zones that, in addition, could offer additional risks for them”, expressed a spokesman.

Added to this is that because they live next to bodies of water that do not have optimal health conditions, they are more prone to various types of diseases.
