Barranquilla: controversial construction of a scale on the road to the sea - Barranquilla - Colombia

Now, the woman insists in the last hours with the complaint, after recently learning of the death of the cyclist Jose Manuel Silver Acevedowho had an accident on December 10 when he fell into one of those ditches.

They are damaging not only a 4G route, but they are also attacking the human being

“What is happening on the road to the Sea is unacceptable. We had denounced it, we had brought it to the attention of the competent authorities, such as the ANI and the Ministry of Transport,” López lamented.

The deputy argued that, by installing a weighing scale, they did not take into account the berm that was had to leave for cyclists and other road users, who must now divert and expose themselves to an accident.

“They are harming not only a 4G route, but they are also attacking human beings, against those who use public transport. We need the dismantling of that weighing and that they buy a private property, ”he added.

Drivers have also reported recklessness by cyclists.

Lourdes López rejected the creation of the scale in public space, which is “taking the lane away from athletes and users”, as she considered, despite the known accident statistics that have recently occurred in the cyclists and motorcyclists union.

And it is that, according to the records that handle the networks of cyclists in Barranquilla and the Atlantic, last year six accidents were counted that involved these users in the Vía al Mar sector. Among these incidents, one died.

While, so far in 2022, there are known to be at least two injured bike users and another deceased.

“The concessionaire (Ruta Costera) ISA could not, did not want, or was not enough to buy a private property and manage to do it without damaging the safe passage for them, but rather completely hindering and truncating this important road,” said the deputy.

The cyclists’ message

How can you think of placing that scale 20 meters from the toll?! They remove the berm and there is no safety zone

The cycling union in the department also regretted what happened with Plata Acevedo and the works that are carried out in this area, very popular with cyclists, without enough job warnings in the way.

“There were some pallets, but they were not well attached to the hole so as not to let anyone pass. The man went through there and went through the ditch. How can you think of placing that scale 20 meters from the toll?! They take away the berm and there is no security zone”, they expressed.

After fighting for his life for two months, José Manuel Plata Acevedo died as a result of the serious injuries he suffered when he fell into the ditch, which had exposed some rods.

The 59-year-old man was the brother of the former head of the Atlantic Passport Office, Gloria Plata, who died in August 2020 of natural causes.

This medium consulted the Coastal Route Concession, in charge of the Papiros toll, but so far has not issued a response in this regard.
