Covid-19 in Antioquia: hospital red alert raised for ICU beds - Medellín - Colombia

Through a decree, Governor Aníbal Gaviria repealed the hospital red alerta measure that was implemented on January 26 due to the high levels of intensive care units in Antioquia.

At the time, Gaviria had indicated that this measure would be applied until occupancy drops to less than 90 percent, at a time when of the 998 beds enabled throughout Antioquia, 918 were occupied.

Now, according to the Sectional Secretariat of Health of Antioquia, the occupation is at 86.64%, which means that with 1,003 ICUs enabled, 869 are occupied.

“The fourth wave of covid-19 has already dropped and has strongly declined, fundamentally linked to the omicron strain, the occupation of intensive care units allows us to lift the measure,” the president said on Tuesday.

Of the 869 occupied ICUs, 148 are with patients infected with covid-19, 26 are suspected of having the virus and 695 are due to pathologies other than coronavirus. The department only recorded 339 new cases of the virus on Tuesday.

The lifting of the red alert was well received by the medical union in Antioquia, although this time, unlike the previous ones, medical procedures that require an ICU bed were not restricted.

Carlos Valdivieso, president of the Antioquia Medical College, agreed with the decision, but asked citizens to maintain biosecurity measures, although the country is discussing whether or not to stop wearing face masks.
