He was born and grew up in one of the poorest territories in Colombia, but that did not prevent him from fulfilling his dream of reaching the Champions League: this is the hard story of Luis Díaz, one of the stars of the Colombian National Team.
‘Lucho’ was born into a Wayuú family, in the municipality of Barrancas, in La Guajira, cataloged as one of the most remote places in Colombian geography.
Díaz did not have an easy start. As is unfortunately common in that area of the country, he was closely acquainted with malnutrition and insecurity. However, football was always the way out.
He learned to play on a court located in front of his grandparents’ house. He inherited the talent of his father, who was also a soccer player in his youth and is now a children’s coach on the same field where Luis kicked his first ball.
Since he was a child his idol was Ronaldinho, so for hours he would train at the door of his house to imitate the Brazilian star’s dribbles and fantasies.

Luis Díaz was discovered by ‘El Pibe’ Valderrama
Although he never thought to go this far, fate would have another plan for him. He was discovered by ‘El Pibe’ Valderrama in an indigenous tournament and after showing his talent, the offers did not stop coming.
Little by little he was climbing in Colombian football. The “peasant” Díaz won four championships in the two years in which he was a member of the club and that caught the attention of international teams.
It was then that he arrived at Porto, where he showed the world the magic of those goals that conquered Europe. All this, while at the same time becoming a celebrity in his country.
Lucho is the faithful demonstration that dreams are achieved with perseverance and effort. And although until now it is a Latin American promise, it is clear that it was born to achieve success.
