Medellín will no longer be mandatory to use face masks in public spaces - Medellín - Colombia

In Medellín, the mask will no longer have to be used in public spaces, confirmed the mayor, Daniel Quintero.

“That is thanks to the fact that the city already has more than 70% of its citizens vaccinated with the two doses (against covid-19). We have 84% of citizens vaccinated with both doses and what it means is that we free ourselves from the mask”, said the local president.

“I invite the citizens of Medellín to go out into the street, to smile, to see their smile, to breathe, to walk the street with happiness. We have overcome the hardest stage of the pandemic and we have done it together,” added Quintero.

Currently, in the capital of Antioquia, 4,500,689 doses have been applied against covid-19. Of these, 1,613,081 correspond to third doses.

Where should the mask be used in Medellín?

Although the resolution to the announcement made by the President of the Republic, Iván Duque, is awaited, it is estimated that in Medellín and in the other municipalities the mask should be used in closed establishments such as shopping centers, universities, schools, the Metro, buses, cinemas and theaters, among others.

Other Antioquian municipalities included in the measure

Other municipalities in the Aburrá Valley that also exceed 70 percent of those vaccinated against covid-19 and that can stop using the mask in public spaces are Envigado, Sabaneta, La Estrella and Caldas. This means that in this metropolitan subregion, it is still requested that masks be worn in Itagüí, Bello, Copacabana, Giradota and Barbosa.

They are also free to wear face coverings in outdoor or public spaces:

Jardín, Betulia, La Pintada, Caramanta, Ciudad Bolívar, Tarso, Venecia, Angelópolis, Pueblorrico, Montebello, Hispania and Támesis, in the southwest of Antioquia.

For its part, in Eastern Antioquia: Rionegro, Guatapé, San Francisco, Algeria, La Unión, Cocorná, San Luis, Abejorral, La Ceja, Alejandría and Concepción.

Meanwhile, in the West: Giraldo, Anzá, Olaya and Caicedo.

Finally, in the North and Northeast: San José de La Montaña, Carolina, Don Matías, Entrerríos, Briceño and Cisneros.
